Dallas Cowboys: Signing Earl Thomas makes too much sense
Former All-Pro safety Earl Thomas was released on Sunday by the Baltimore Ravens. The Dallas Cowboys are considered the “heavy favorites”.
The Baltimore Ravens decided to part ways with safety Earl Thomas on Sunday. They released Thomas due to personal conduct detrimental to the team. This comes after Thomas was sent home from practice on Friday for an altercation involving former Ravens teammate Chuck Clark.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Dallas Cowboys are the leading contenders for Earl Thomas after officially being released by the Ravens. This is no surprise for Cowboys fans, as Thomas has been linked to Dallas as far back as 2018.
Thomas is a Texas native and has expressed his desire to play for his hometown team, the team he was a fan of his whole life prior to being drafted in the NFL.
How Earl Thomas fits in with the Dallas Cowboys
Thomas, who is currently 31-years old, had a pretty average season for the Ravens in 2019. He started 15 games for the team and had 49 total tackles, two interceptions, 2.0 sacks, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Thomas has made seven Pro Bowls throughout his career and has cemented his legacy as one of the best safeties in NFL history.
Thomas fits perfectly with what the Dallas Cowboys need in the 2020 NFL season. The Cowboys have built a great front seven on the defensive front. Their only question mark heading into the season is their young secondary. While Thomas is certainly on the back-end of his career, he provides a great veteran presence for this young secondary and provides a playmaker in the back of the defense.
If the Dallas Cowboys can sign Earl Thomas on a one-year, heavy-incentive contract, they should certainly entertain the idea. The Cowboys have the potential to compete for a Super Bowl this season given their immensely talented offense and successful coaching staff. Signing Thomas simply gives the Cowboys a better chance of contending in 2020.
