Can the revamped Dallas Cowboys defense shock the NFL?
How Will They Play?
When you think of the Dallas Cowboys, you think about a dominant offense with a decent defense. I truly believe that many people are undervaluing the defense as a result of the history Dallas has of fielding a mediocre defense.
This time around, things should be different. May I put some more emphasis on the word SHOULD? This is why.
Within the first two days, the Cowboys not only filled in two open spots, but they also upgraded. Unfortunately, McCoy suffered a tragic injury, but the Cowboys still have an improved defensive line compared to last season.
When you look at the group on paper and how they performed last season, you should get excited for September. They were 10th in passing yards and 11th in rushing yards. While that’s not top-notch, you need to put this into perspective.

Sure, the Cowboys lost two big names on their defense, but they were able to put together a much better all-around lineup. Improving their run defense was a priority, and should close opportunities not only against the run but also against play-action plays.
The overhaul of the defensive coaching staff should be great for a team that had a good roster yet a poor performance. From former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s conservative focus on the tackle style, to now Mike Nolan’s aggressive style, big plays are bound to happen.
To be able to have an effective aggressive defense, you need very athletic players with a coach that can throw different looks at you. That is exactly what the Cowboys have on the field and the sidelines.
Jerry Jones has yet to sign a free agent to fill McCoy’s spot, and it is unknown if he will. If by chance someone is signed, it will only make the defense better.
I hope people downplay the Cowboys defense. Before they know it, they will have linebacker Jaylon Smith in their backfield, or Chidobe Awuzie running the ball the other way.
