The Dallas Cowboys might get their safety after all
By Angel Torres
The Dallas Cowboys have flirted with the idea of adding an elite talent at safety but it now looks like they may get their wish.
According to a tweet from CBS Sports reporter Jason La Canfora, the Baltimore Ravens could be preparing to move on from the talented yet troubled safety Earl Thomas. This after a reported fight took place between Thomas and teammate Chuck Clark at the Ravens’ team facility on Friday according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Seeing as the Dallas Cowboys were interested in Thomas’ services in the past, a union could potentially be headed their way.
In order for the Baltimore Ravens to save salary cap space, they could release Thomas and cite “conduct detrimental to the team” as a way of not having to pay his guaranteed portion. Of course, a disagreement might ensue between the two but the recent rash of reported bad behavior from Thomas would certainly benefit the Ravens.
A trade involving another team would instantly hit the books for the Ravens although they could get something in value in return. An outright release might be music to the ears of Jerry Jones. A player released at this time of the year hurts the player financially more than anything.
That means the Cowboys might finally be able to sign Thomas and potentially do so at a discounted rate. The ongoing pandemic could also play a factor as the seven-time Pro Bowler could opt to stay closer to home in order to help his family.
Last, you know the Cowboys love the spotlight. And I can only imagine how high the front office would be praised if they were to land an All-Pro safety right before the season starts for a price tag nobody would have thought possible at the beginning of the offseason à la Everson Griffen.
The Dallas Cowboys have just been rumored to have cleared cap space by reworking the Tyron Smith deal. It’s an interesting time to do so with such a high profile player looking to be on his way out.
There must be a legitimate reason why the Baltimore Ravens would move on from such a talented defender?
This is of course true to its core as rumors have Earl Thomas as being a difficult teammate. The same could be said of most of the great players in the history of sports. The drive to be great at all costs drives some athletes to alienate everyone in order to secure their legacy.
It’s also true that Earl Thomas grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan and would love to end his career with a Star on his helmet. This might sway the player to be a better teammate in order to secure another Super Bowl ring.
Adding such a dynamic veteran player to a defense that is already drawing hype is both scary and dangerous on both sides of the spectrum. For one, the player could in fact “drink their own cool-aid” and allow the hype to get to their head. It could also draw the disdain of other teams and motivates the opponent to give it their all during their matchup.
It could also give the Dallas Cowboys a legitimate defense to go along what should be a top-rated offense. For the most part in the last 20 years, it has been an either-or proposition on both sides of the ball.
Schematically, Earl Thomas thrives as a single high safety where he can roam the field and use his range to intercept passes. This would fit in perfectly with the “throw the kitchen sink” defense I am expecting to see when it comes to the Cowboys pass rush.
As excited as I already am about the Dallas Cowboys defense, one can only wonder if fans will break out the “Doomsday Defense” moniker that has been absent for so long.
