Should Dallas Cowboys fans be concerned following a recent interview from Trysten Hill?

The Dallas Cowboys made UCF ‘s Trysten Hill their top selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. Viewed as the perfect three-technique defensive tackle, the most important position in former coordinator Rod Marinelli’s scheme, Hill was anything but during his rookie season in Dallas.

Playing in only seven games and making zero starts despite the need for improved play at his position, Hill would end his first year in Dallas recording a mere five tackles and already being label as a potential draft bust.

It didn’t help that the 22-year old rookie was called out for falling asleep at a team meeting by NBA legend Isiah Thomas, who was giving a speech during the team’s bye week. That incident seemed to only hint at some of the issues happening behind the scenes.

Hill would play a total of 121 defensive snaps in 2019. As a comparison, Cowboys’ cornerback Chidobe Awuzie played 1,019 of the team’s defensive snaps last season.

No Dallas Cowboys player was hurt more then Trysten Hill this offseason

Things only got worst for Hill this offseason. Not only did he lose his biggest sponsor in Marinelli following sweeping coaching staff changes made by new head coach Mike McCarthy, but then a worldwide pandemic hit. It’s hard to imagine another player on the Cowboys’ roster that would have benefited more from a full offseason training program under a new coaching staff than Hill.

Despite his draft status, Hill’s future in Dallas seemed in question after the Cowboys signed six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy at the same position. The Cowboys also used their third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore. It was starting to appear as if Hill might be on the outside looking in when it came to securing a spot on the final roster in just his second season.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, McCoy suffered a season-ending quad injury this past week. That news placed Hill back into the spotlight. And while reports have praised the young defensive tackle’s work this offseason and early into training camp, fans might find his recent press conference worrisome.

On Friday, Hill answered questions from the media during a virtual press conference. With a time of 3:36, this is by far one of the shortest interviews made available by the team’s official YouTube channel. And that’s due in large part to some of Hill’s curt responses and seemingly blase attitude. The cringe-worthy interview can be viewed below.

Admittedly, you don’t have to be stellar in front of the media in order to be a great football player. And some of the commenters on the above video claim Hill is simply young, nervous, and clearly uncomfortable talking to the press. But when compared to a previous interview from last May, those takes don’t seem to hold water.

The fact is Trysten Hill did himself no favors in this latest interview. That’s if he’s trying to convince the Dallas Cowboys’ fanbase that he’s not the same player who struggled with apparent maturity issues last season. While only a handful actually know what’s truly happening behind the scenes, it’s clear that Hill’s play on the field will have to do the talking for him.
