The Dallas Cowboys are hoping that iron really sharpens iron when it comes to their defense

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2020 NFL regular season with one of the highest-rated wide receiver corps in the league. And the Cowboys are hoping that one of the byproducts of having such a talented positional group is that it helps to improve their defense. Specifically, their defensive backs.

The Cowboys might possess three of the top wide receivers in the entire NFL all playing in a single unit. The trio of four-time Pro Bowler Amari Cooper, former third rounder Michael Gallup, and highly-touted 2020 first-round pick CeeDee Lamb could be one of the best starting three the league has.

And their presence figures to baffle opposing defenses this year, especially when combined with the Cowboys’ other offensive weapons like running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard, tight end Blake Jarwin, and an offensive line littered with current and potential Pro Bowlers.  And at the heart of it all is fifth-year quarterback Dak Prescott under center who is coming off his best statistical season as a professional.

The offensive side of the ball in Dallas figures to wreak havoc against their schedule of opponents in 2020. But during training camp practices over the past few days, Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Nolan believes that the team’s overwhelming offensive talent, specifically at wide receiver, is actually helping the secondary to improve.

Here’s what Nolan told the media during a virtual press conference on Wednesday via the team’s official YouTube channel.

"“I tell you one of the things that will make a big difference for all of our secondary players is just the people we’re going against. We’ve got as good a wide receiver corps I’m sure as [there is] in the league. … That helps your younger players as well as your older players because the competitiveness they face everyday in practice makes them better. And that’s as big a plus for that unit as we have.”"

Why this rookie cornerback may have an edge over other Dallas Cowboys defenders

While the Cowboys’ receivers are trying to get the best out of the secondary during training camp practices, a new Buffalo Bills’ wideout may also have the big impact on the upcoming season for Dallas. Of course, we’re referencing former Minnesota Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs, the brother of the Cowboys’ 2020 second-round cornerback out of Alabama, Trevon Diggs.

Over the offseason, the Diggs’ brothers worked out together with Trevon benefiting from his older brother’s five years of NFL experience. According to the younger Diggs, the two talk daily in an effort to be better prepared for the upcoming season. That special connection could give the 22-year old cornerback an edge over most rookies, especially considering the lack of a true offseason training program.
