Dallas Cowboys cut Gerald McCoy; What does this mean?
Replacements within the system
The obvious impact of this is that the Cowboys lost a big-time signing, and now have a hole at defensive tackle. Signing the former first-team All-Pro was supposed to help Dallas make a run at the Super Bowl.
Replacing McCoy will not be an easy thing to do, but Dallas does have a couple of options on their roster. Let’s take a look at that first.
Already on the roster is veteran defensive lineman, Tyrone Crawford. He has experience playing on the inside for Dallas, and could once again be a starter for the Cowboys after being pushed out by defensive end Everson Griffen.
The issue with Crawford is that he is returning from a hip surgery which cut his 2019 season short. He may share snaps with other linemen.
Luckily, the Cowboys retained run-stuffer Antwaun Woods. The 27-year-old had his best season in 2018 when he made 34 tackles and had 1.5 sacks. While he is not a starting-caliber player, he is a good rotational piece.
Another option could be in 2019 second-round pick, Trysten Hill. He only played 11 percent of the defensive snaps and had five tackles, but he is young at the age of 22. He has a lot of untapped potential after sitting on the sidelines for the majority of the 2019 season.
Another young lineman in Neville Gallimore can step in after being drafted in the third round this past draft. The freakishly athletic lineman is looked at as a second-round talent and may be able to pitch in a bit. That is if what happened to Hill doesn’t happen to him.
The options listed above are already within the Cowboys system, but will likely be looked at as last resort options. The reason for this isn’t because they aren’t capable, but because there are more proven players elsewhere.
