Everson Griffen: Just when you thought the Dallas Cowboys were done

Most people know how far the Dallas Cowboys‘ defense has come from last season to this season. Well … on paper at least.

I and a lot of other people thought that the roster the Cowboys had was final and was ready for the 2020 NFL season. Instead, they go out and sign a very good defensive end in Everson Griffen. This feels like a dream.

I have been consistently talking about how the Cowboys defense needs to get better, and I’m going to selfishly say that it’s working. I am speaking my wishes into existence.

The team has already added a plethora of talent to start and be depth players. In signing Griffen, they get a veteran that can still play at a high level.

He is a four-time Pro Bowler, most recently making it last season after sacking the quarterback 8.0 times. If that’s a low number of sacks for you, well he had 24 quarterback hits. Not to mention 41 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles.

If Griffen was on the Cowboys with those stats last season, he would be second in sacks, quarterback hits, and tackles for defensive linemen. Put that into perspective.

You can be concerned with a player’s aging, but I wouldn’t worry about it in Griffen’s case. His best seasons have been from his aged 27 season which was in 2014, up until last season.

With so much success in the past couple of seasons, the age argument should not be brought up. He may be one of the few non-quarterbacks that can thrive in their 30’s.

Signing a one-year deal will ensure that the Cowboys do not suffer if age does catch up to him. This is a low-risk, high-reward situation for the Cowboys.

In terms of player value for their contract, prepare to be blown away. By average value, he ranks 66th in the NFL among defensive linemen and 37th among defensive ends. By that, he is a Pro Bowl defensive end that is being paid as a middle-of-the-pack lineman.

A great player, a great contract, a great signing. The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the 2020 season with a completely revamped defensive roster and defensive coaching staff. They didn’t need Griffen, but he sure does help. This signing is a dream come true.
