Dallas Cowboys: Who’s feeling the pressure to perform in 2020?
By Brandon Ladd
Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, pressure scale: 7.0
A neck stinger derailed the 2019 season of second-year linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, who in nine games saw his tackle count from his rookie season sliced in half.
Vander Esch has the pressure to perform because his second contract is not signed quite yet, while his counterpart linebacker Jaylon Smith has his money already. Meaning that a lack of production over the next two years could push Vander Esch out of Dallas.
The reports indicate that the Wolfhunter is feeling “wonderful” and is ready to play again. That would be a blessing for the Cowboys which felt the impact of losing the heart and soul of their defense for almost half of last season.
It’s hard to project linebacker play outside of the sentiment that if Vander Esch is healthy and has his confidence. He will make plays.
Vander Esch just can’t afford another major injury. His play, when healthy, hasn’t been questioned yet.
