Which Dallas Cowboys rookie will see the most snaps early on?
By Brandon Ladd
The Dallas Cowboys will rely heavily on rookies to patch holes. So which one gets the most snaps?
Early on in free agency, this offseason the Dallas Cowboys witnessed six starters from their 2019 team depart for new homes. Avoiding overspending for free agents, the organization was able to fill their holes with cheaper free agents and draft picks in one of their more exciting drafts in recent memory.
It sounds like a great strategy on paper but it takes young players playing a lot of snaps early this season. Who can step up?
CeeDee Lamb, wide receiver, first-round selection
Slot receiver Randall Cobb was able to put up over 800 yards on 55 receptions his single season with America’s Team. Cobb departed for the Houston Texans this offseason leaving the third pass-catching role available on a team that has increasingly relied on receivers to pick up the slack for lessening tight end play.
The Cowboys recognized they needed to prioritize their offense in the draft even if it ranked number one in the NFL for total yards last season, so, they drafted wide receiver CeeDee Lamb out of Oklahoma.
Dallas’ front office really wanted Lamb in the first round, with multiple reports of Lamb being the sixth-best player on their draft board and even denying three trade requests for their No. 17 pick.
The offense will instantly have a role for Lamb and they will also have an ability to make Lamb a niche wide receiver, who can take advantage of space after out-breaking routes underneath. Taking advantage of the prolific vertical ability of receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.
With all that said it is fairly easy to project the number of snaps Lamb will play early on, just look at the number of 3-wide receivers snaps for the Cowboys in 2019. That number was 713 such snaps. Putting the estimate for Lamb to play around 44 snaps per game if you divide that number by 16 games. A lot of Lamb will be seen early on.
