Rumors had the Cowboys interested in former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick prior to the NFL draft. And while Dallas has plenty of candidates currently at the position, they just lost one of their free-agent signings in cornerback Maurice Canady, who has reportedly opted out for the upcoming season.

The trio of Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Anthony Brown still remain in Dallas. But it’s anyone’s guess how the new coaching staff truly feels about the starting potential of each one.

Dallas also signed veteran defensive back Daryl Worley in free agency. He figures to slot in somewhere in the secondary, either at cornerback or safety. The presence of these four provides the team with a solid foundation of experienced veterans.

The Cowboys used their second-round selection in this year’s draft on Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs, so you have to figure his coaches will give him every opportunity to carve out a significant role as a rookie. The same goes for fourth-rounder Reggie Robinson II out of Tulsa.

Yet, the lack of a real offseason training program likely puts every rookie behind in their development. Therefore, NFL experience should carry much more weight this year due to the lack of overall training and with no preseason to play.

If the Cowboys don’t like what they see early from this group at training camp and wish to add more veteran experience, Kirkpatrick could be a solid signing. A first-round selection back in 2012, Kirkpatrick spent his entire eight-year career with the Bengals.

The 30-year old corner has a total of 67 NFL starts under his belt. Unfortunately, a knee injury limited Kirkpatrick to just six games last season and he was released by Cincinnati in March. If the medicals check out, this is an experienced NFL starter that may sign for the veteran minimum who could come in and provide some quality depth at the position.
