The Dallas Cowboys safety chase appears to be over

The Dallas Cowboys have lost out on the Jamal Adams sweepstakes after months of speculation that the star wanted to come home.

For the second time in recent memory, the Dallas Cowboys have been denied a safety by the Seattle Seahawks. The only difference is that the compensation headed to New York is far more than what the presumed going rate was.

Most Cowboy fans were heartbroken to learn that the New York Jets shipped All-Pro safety, Jamal Adams until they heard what Seattle gave up for him. Multiple reports have the Seahawks giving up their first-round pick in 2021 and 2022 along with a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 fourth-round pick. Also involved is Seattle safety, Bradley McDougald.

It was tough enough for me to type that so I can imagine the Dallas Cowboys front office giving up that much for the player. I am not saying he is not worth it, but that is a lot of draft capital to give up for a single player. I didn’t even mention the huge contract that Adams will command sometime in the near future.

Now there is still a glimmer of hope for those optimistic fans who will never give up. Adams still has to report to Seattle and pass a physical. There is still outside, although very slim, that something happens and the deal is canceled.

The reality is Jamal Adams is going to be a Seahawk and the Dallas Cowboys are once again entering a season where questions remain at the safety position. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Xavier Woods and am very curious about Donovan Wilson. But having a happy motivated All-Pro in your defensive backfield is a dream that will not come to fruition.

If you ran the Dallas Cowboys, would you have given up that much for Jamal Adams?

I would be OK giving up my first-round pick in 2021. With the college season on life support, sifting through players that will essentially be out of football for over a season feels like a gigantic loss in value. The pick will not have as much worth as in previous seasons.

I would have also been good with giving up a third and a fourth-round pick. Both teams obviously see this upcoming draft as a wash meaning the compensation had to involve an actual first-round pick hence the 2022 first-rounder. This gave the Jets the illusion that they desperately needed for the casual fan.

Now giving up a starting safety is also a big pill to swallow but it is one that I would have given up also. So if Dallas had to give up this draft capital and send Xavier Woods to New York, my answer is yes.

Woods is entering the last year of his contract and has hired stud agent David Mulugheta as his agent. If you are not familiar, Mulugheta represents star safeties such as Baltimore’s Earl Thomas. That means Dallas could lose him after this year anyway since it looks like Woods is looking to be paid as a top safety.

Paying Woods top dollar seems to be the next contract fight on the horizon. If I have to pay someone, I am paying a guy who has proven himself and one that plays with the passion Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin played with.

All five Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl championships had one thing in common. The defense was just as good as the offense and sometimes better. The defense has been neglected for far too long and I will chalk this up as a front office philosophy that is flawed.

Giving up unknowns for a known commodity has worked everywhere except Pro Football. Even when presented that, I still would have swung for the fences and tried to put up a comparable offer.

One thing that I am interested to see if a Dallas Cowboys insider will reveal if the team’s front office were having conversations with the New York Jets and how far were they willing to go.
