#3 – Improved Safety play?

For years, Cowboy fans have been clamoring for improved safety play. And despite speculation of the team potentially adding generational talents like Earl Thomas or Jamal Adams to the position, the starting duo of Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods has loomed over the secondary the past three seasons.

But that will change in 2020 as Heath left the team this offseason for the greener pastures of free agency, inking a two-year deal to join the Las Vegas Raiders. Woods might not be far behind him as the former sixth rounder is enter the final year of his rookie deal in Dallas.

Despite the changes on the horizon, the Cowboys have did little to upgrade the position this offseason. The biggest move Dallas made was signing former first rounder Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to a one-year deal. He figures to slot into Heath’s starting role.

The Cowboys also re-signed Darian Thompson after the veteran started four games for the team last season. Rounding out the limited depth chart is Donovan Wilson, a sixth-round pick in 2019 who racked up three interceptions last preseason.

There has been some talk about the Dallas Cowboys transitioning one of their many cornerback candidates to safety this offseason. The logical choice is Daryl Worley, who played the position some with the Raiders. Beyond that, it remains to be seen if the near hands-off approach the team took this offseason at a position they traditionally undervalue will have a positive impact in 2020.
