Which Dallas Cowboys’ position goes into 2020 with the most unanswered questions?

The Dallas Cowboys enter this summer unlike any other in its franchise’s history. After a near decade long run by head coach Jason Garrett, the team elected to move on in January and hired former Super Bowl winner Mike McCarthy to take his place.

Now armed with a fresh head coach, a revamped coaching staff, and plenty of new players along the roster, America’s Team enters the new season in the midst of a pandemic. One that forced offseason training activities to become entirely virtual, and threatens to reshape training camp, the preseason, and potentiality more in the coming months.

The combination of which has created even more questions than usual for the Cowboys and all other NFL teams as every organization continues to carefully traverse this new territory. There are certainly plenty of unknowns ahead for the league.

And there are also several unknowns when it comes to the Cowboys’ roster. But there is one positional group in Dallas that we believe has more unanswered questions than the rest. And that’s at the cornerback position.

That’s despite the presence of several recognizable names on the depth chart at defensive back. The Cowboys lost Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Jones this offseason in free agency. But the team’s roster still includes veterans like Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Anthony Brown.

But the new coaching staff in Dallas has also thrown a new wrinkle of unknowns into the equation. As Lewis explained to DallasCowboys.com recently, the new hires to the staff has opened up the possibility for a lot of change at the cornerback position in 2020.

"“They said that everybody has a clean slate. It doesn’t matter how big, tall, how long you’ve been here – it doesn’t matter. If you can play ball, they want to see you in that position to go and compete for that job.”"

And while it would seem the trio of Awuzie, Lewis, and Brown gives the Cowboys a sense of security at the position, there are plenty of candidates to earn significant roles at the cornerback position this year. And the new coaching staff puts them all in play.

The Dallas Cowboys’ roster is currently overflowing with cornerback candidates

According to the current roster, there are a whopping 11 corner candidates so far. Outside of the previous trio mentioned they include C.J. Goodwin, Deante Burton, Maurice Canady, Saivion Smith, Chris Westry, Daryl Worley, plus rookies Trevon Diggs and Reggie Robinson II.

There are so many cornerback candidates, in fact, the Cowboys could look to convert some of them to safety. That’s a position that lost starter Jeff Heath to free agency, but gained former first-rounder Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

The exodus of Byron Jones, the presence of a new coaching staff, and the slew of new faces make the Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback position the team’s positional group facing the most unknowns entering the new season. And those questions will only continue to linger as the NFL enters into unknown territory due to a worldwide pandemic.
