Dallas Cowboys: Who’s left in free agency that can help this team?
Defensive Positions of Need
Free agency has not been kind to the Dallas Cowboys on the defensive side of the football with the losses of starters Byron Jones, Maliek Collins, Jeff Heath, and Robert Quinn. All were key pieces on the Cowboys defense and needed to be replaced to make sure the team can go into the draft without having to reach for a player.
So far the Cowboys have re-signed cornerback Anthony Brown and signed Maurice Canady to help cover the loss of Jones. The Cowboys then re-signed safety Darian Thompson and signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to cover the loss of Jeff Heath, and some would say Clinton-Dix is actually an upgrade at the position.
They also were able to sign Gerald McCoy to replace Collins and again you could say that while McCoy is an older player he is an upgrade at the position for the team.
Now they need to bring someone in to cover the loss of Quinn and also sign a big bodies defensive tackle to help stop the run, so here are a few players that could help them fulfill these needs.
Markus Golden, LB
When the Dallas Cowboys lost Quinn in free agency they lost 11 sacks and a player that could match DeMarcus Lawrence‘s ability to pressure the quarterback consistently. There aren’t to many defensive ends left on the market that can give the Cowboys that type of production but I believe Golden can.
When he’s had the ability to play a full 16 game seasons (2016,2019) Golden has been able to wreak havoc on quarterbacks totaling 22.5 sacks in those seasons. The problem for Golden is his ability to stay on the field and the Cowboys are going to really think about that before they approach Golden.
Jadeveon Clowney, DE
While I don’t truly believe Clowney will sign with the Dallas Cowboys, you can never rule it out if owner and general manager Jerry Jones really wants him in this team. If he were to sign with the Cowboys Clowney would be a perfect fit for this team. He would play on the opposite side of Lawrence and can move inside to create pressure with his speed off the snap of the ball against guards and centers.
Now the problem for Clowney is he is reportedly looking for $20 million a year from teams and no one is willing to give it to him which leaves him with only two options. Re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks on a cheaper deal or take another prove it deal with a team and I believe that’s what he will do.
