What’s in Dallas?

The Dallas Cowboys have a group of good young cornerbacks. Among them is 24-year-old Chidobe Awuzie, 24-year-old Jourdan Lewis, and 27-year-old Byron Jones.

This group is coming off a quietly good year after performing notably well in 2018. In 2018 they ranked sixth in points against and 13th in yards then dropped to 11th in points and rose to 10th in yards respectively.

While their ranking for scoring against drops four places, they still gave up three fewer points in 2019 than 2018. The lack of a run defense overshadowed how the defense played against the pass.

One player from the young trio has an expiring contract this offseason. The Cowboys number one cornerback, Byron Jones, is looking to get paid either from Dallas or another team.

There are many reports out there that believe Byron’s time in Dallas is over. The main reason for this belief is that they have a plethora of key players needing a new contract. With Jones being as good as he is, the Cowboys may not have enough room to keep him around.

While the Cowboys are sure in a tough cap situation, Byron can be someone they lean on while finding another way to save some cap space. How can they do that? There are some options they can explore shown in the link.

Could Chris Harris Jr. be a possible replacement for Jones if he leaves? That is a very real possibility. Someone is going to need to take his spot.

Is Awuzie ready to take the next step? He did manage to have a good season in 2019. He had 79 tackles, 14 passes defended, albeit only one interception.

He also managed to give up 1.7 fewer yards per completion, a lower passer rating by 7.3 and managed to get one quarterback knockdown compared to 2018. It is a good step up for Awuzie.

The Cowboys have good options on their roster. With a new defensive coordinator in place, no one will know for sure what Dallas will look at to make their decision.
