For six days, the status of Jason Garrett as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys has been in limbo. But will two job interviews finally end all the rumors?

Will Mike McCarthy or Marvin Lewis be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys? After months of speculation and six days of radio silence from a typical spotlight hungry organization, there are finally two names other than Jason Garrett that have been associated with the head coaching position for America’s Team.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are set to meet with former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy on Saturday for what is believed to be the head coaching vacancy in Dallas. And also per Rapoport, the team has reportedly met with former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis for the position as well.

For the past six days, both the media and fans have been awaiting word about the fate of current Cowboys head coach, Garrett. Yet, the organization has allowed his status to remain in limbo as Garrett’s contract reportedly doesn’t expire until January 14. And according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Cowboys don’t feel obligated to clarify the situation because of the expiring contract.

According to ESPN reporter Ed Werder, Garrett has been campaigning to remain as head coach for the Cowboys despite ending the season with an 8-8 record and out of the playoffs. The organization’s refusal to publicly address the situation has only fueled speculation that the team’s second longest-tenured head coach in their history has found a way to keep his job or another role in Dallas.

Although the news of the McCarthy and Lewis interviews seems to confirm there is in fact a vacancy at the head coaching position in Dallas, does that completely close the door on a possible Garrett return? Will it finally end the speculation about his job status in Dallas? The answer, I’m afraid, is likely no.

The fact is despite the reports of both Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis interviewing for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching position, that doesn’t discount the possibility that Jason Garrett isn’t interviewing for the role too. The Cowboys’ brass is likely comparing McCarthy, Lewis and all future applicants against Garrett before ultimately deciding which candidate is best suited for the job. And there’s a chance that person could still end up being Jason Garrett.
