Now that the Dallas Cowboys season is essentially over, it’s time to looks towards the future. Time to see who won’t be a starter next season.

This season has been a big disappointment for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. Even though they still have a chance to make the playoffs with an Eagles loss and a Cowboys win on Sunday. I’m not getting my hopes up and instead, I’m looking forward to the 2020 season.

It’s almost a given that the Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and some of his coaching staff will not be back next season. This also means some of the players on this team that shouldn’t have been starting, won’t be in 2020. So let’s take a look at some players that are most likely to lose their starting position next season.

#1 – Jason Witten

I hate to say this but if the future first-ballot Hall of Famer returns to the Dallas Cowboys next season he will be coming back as a backup. The Cowboys have needed a new tight end for a few years now and Witten is just blocking that from happening. His friendship with the head coach helped him keep his starting position but not anymore. Look for the Cowboys to draft a tight end to pair with Blake Jarwin going forward.

#2 – Jeff Heath

Jeff Heath has been holding down the starting position at safety for a few years now and hasn’t had much to show for it that is positive. What he has shown though is inconsistency when it comes to tackling ball carriers and covering the center of the field in the secondary. For that reason, Heath will go back to his role as a special team ace and back up safety in 2020 and the Cowboys will draft a safety to replace him.

#3 – Antwaun Woods

Antwaun Woods has shown that he belongs in this league and on the Cowboys roster, but not as a starter. And while Woods has shown he can make plays in the running game and will hustle all over the field he hasn’t been the run-stopping defensive tackle that the team needs.

The Cowboys are in need of a big body that can take up double teams opening up lanes for their young linebackers in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith to make plays. This though is a position I believe the Cowboys will look to re-tool in free agency and the draft.

#4 – Anthony Brown

Before his injury, cornerback Anthony Brown was the target of many quarterbacks the Dallas Cowboys faced this season. Leading many to plead for fellow corner Jourdan Lewis to take over as the slot cornerback and when he did he played very well. I believe the Cowboys will bring him back but he will be backing up Lewis after they battle it out in training camp.

#5 – Sean Lee

In the absence of fellow linebacker Vander Esch, Sean Lee has played well in a few games and very poorly in others. The latter being the most notable of the two, with quarterbacks attacking Lee in the passing game with faster tight ends and running backs. Lee’s desire to play will bring him back to the Cowboys again but he will be there as more of a player-coach. Look for linebacker Luke Gifford to take Lee’s spot in the linebacker rotation next season.

A lot of the names on this list we have come to know and love, depending on what they did the previous week. But when there is a change in management some of the good ones are usually caught up in the storm and that what I believe will happen to the players on this list next season.
