Dallas Cowboys pull everyone back in with dominant win
By Tyrone Starr
After several weeks of uninspired, abysmal effort, the Dallas Cowboys gave everyone a glimpse of what they can be moving forward with a 44-21 win.
It was the great Michael Corleone who once said just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! For Dallas Cowboys fans, truer words may have never been spoken.
After enduring four losses in their last five games, a lot of fans just wanted this nightmare season to be over. Even if the Dallas Cowboys somehow back their way into the playoffs, the impending whooping would just be more torture.
In true dramatic Dallas Cowboys fashion, not only is this the time that the team wins their first game against a winning football team but also Dallas blows them out.
Putting a 44-21 beatdown on the Los Angeles Rams, the Dallas Cowboys did their best to get the bandwagon back up and running. While it was certainly a refreshing change from recent outings, the effort begs the question of where was this over the last month.
On Sunday, I wrote about how important the run game on both sides of the ball would be to the success or failure of this game. On queue, Cowboys running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard both went over 100 yards while Todd Gurley was held to a very pedestrian 20 yards on 11 carries.
Will the Cowboys coaching staff remember that Pollard can contribute moving forward or will he remain a forgotten man as they head out on the road next week? For whatever reason, it seems as if Jason Garrett is scared to trust him away from AT&T Stadium.
Despite averaging over five yards per tote on the road, Pollard has only been given 16 carries which boggle the mind. Regardless, the run game we saw against Los Angeles needs to travel to Philadelphia next week if the good feelings are to continue.
Obviously that includes feeding Zeke. In the six games that Elliott has gone over 100 yards rushing this year, the Dallas Cowboys are 5-1. Given that they have just seven wins, it seems like going to the 21 well would be a smart move going forward.
The inspired defensive effort would also be nice to see moving forward. Sunday was easily the best game of cornerback Chidobe Awuzie‘s season. Linebacker Sean Lee found the fountain of youth making several big plays and the defensive line actually spent some time in the opposing backfield.
For one week, the Dallas Cowboys reminded everyone of their potential to be a tough out come playoff time. Of course, they have to actually earn their way into the playoffs in order to be a problem for another team.
That journey begins and ends next week in Philadelphia. If Dallas wins, their in. If they don’t, they will have to rely on the Giants to surprise the Eagles while Dallas handles business against Washington.
No one, especially the Cowboys, wants that scenario. The easy way to avoid this problem is to win next week. The results will largely depend on which team shows up.
If the team that embarrassed the Rams heads to Philadelphia, they will come with hats and t-shirts commemorating their achievement. On the flip side, if the Cowboys that went to Chicago, head northeast, it will be the last time a lot of these players and coaches board a plane a part of this organization.
For one more week at least, we are all back in. Hopefully, we don’t end up as Michael Corleone did.
