Dallas Cowboys: Could Urban Meyer succeed like Pete Carroll?
The Dallas Cowboys have been linked to former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. If hired, could Meyer be the next Pete Carroll?
The Dallas Cowboys season is in a tailspin and head coach Jason Garrett has a huge target on his back. Now reports are leaking out that the Cowboys have spoken with former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. But, can Meyer have the same success as the last college coach to jump to the NFL, Pete Carroll?
Both were very successful during their time at the collegiate level, with Meyer going 187-32 (854 win percentage) during his college career and 12-3 in bowl games over 17 years. Carroll is around the same at 97-19 (836 win percentage) over his college coaching career and 9-2 in bowl games over nine years.
That tells me that both men are able to motivate their players on the field. An while all that is great the NFL is a different beast and Carroll has proven that he belongs and has a Super Bowl ring to prove it.
While Carroll had to build his team from up he was in a weak division at allowed him to do so. Well fast forward to 2019 and the NFC West and the Seahawks are at the top while the NFC East and the Dallas Cowboys are fighting for their playoff lives and thinking about another coaching change.
It almost sounds like the same situation that Carroll had when he came back to coach in the NFL, but there is one big difference, and that is the talent level Meyer would get by stepping in as the Cowboys head coach.
If the Dallas Cowboys do in fact make Meyer their next head coach it might just be a perfect time and fit for him to take over. He’d be inheriting a team full of offensive weapons to include running back Ezekiel Elliott who he coached during his time at Ohio State.
He will also have quarterback Dak Prescott who is familiar with Meyer’s offensive scheme because Prescott’s college coach Dan Mullen ran the same spread offense with a heavy running game.
He would also inherit a talented yet young defense with cornerstones to build around like a pass rusher that can get to the quarterback in DeMarcus Lawrence, speedy linebackers that can play sideline to sideline in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, and a young physical safety in Xavier Woods.
All they are missing is a coach that can really motivate them to perform to their potential every week. A task that the current head coach hasn’t been able to do for some time now.
Everything Meyer would gain is something that Carroll had to build from scratch which in essence gives Meyer a leg up on Carroll. But, gain Carroll has proved he can do it in the NFL can Meyer do it as well?
