The Dallas Cowboys will be facing the biggest test this season going against the Patriots and Bill Belichick. Can they best the defensive mastermind?

This Sunday the Dallas Cowboys will be going head to head with a different type of beast. They will be facing off against defensive mastermind Bill Belichick. A man who has been able to tear apart almost every offense that he has faced with the New England Patriots since 2001.

Belichick’s ability to take away an offenses best weapons is something that most can’t do successfully in every game. Yet, Belichick has been able to do it, but that doesn’t mean his defense isn’t vulnerable to attacks from this Cowboys offense. His defense this season while coming in as the number one defense in the league, is susceptible to a strong running game and a mobile quarterback.

The Dallas Cowboys young but talented offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has all the weapons to take advantage of the weakness of the Patriots defense and he can thank the Baltimore Ravens for giving him the blueprint. In their game against the Ravens, the Patriots had no answer for stopping the run-pass option running game between running back Mark Ingram and quarterback Lamar Jackson. Both were able to torch the Belichick led defense with a combined 203 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

That running game then opened up the Ravens passing game for Jackson against the best defensive secondary in the league. Jackson would end his day with 163 yards and add one more touchdown to the scoreboard through the air, not out of this world but good enough to win the game. Moore can do the same thing with running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott employing a run-pass option offense to keep Belichick and his defense off-balanced.

The reason this has to work is that Belichick wants to force offenses to throw against his defense. So if there was any better time to start letting Prescott use his legs to attack a defense, it’s now.

We’ve already seen that Prescott can win games with his arms, now he’s going to need to use his legs to open up the Dallas Cowboys offense. If he can successfully do that and Moore can call the right plays at the right time, it will open up running lanes for Elliott and passing lanes for their receivers and tight ends.
