What can Dallas do?

Fixing the play-calling would mean a change in either offensive coordinator Kellen Moore or head coach Jason Garrett. A midseason change does not look likely, but a change can very well happen during the offseason.

Garrett has been the head coach in Dallas since Week 10 of the 2010 season. In 10 seasons he has a .596 win percentage (after Week 11). It does seem as if the Garrett-run Cowboys tend to have a good offense, but a decent defense.

By Pro Football Reference rankings, the defense has been getting better year by year since 2013, while the offense has been either good or below average. So, there are some positives and surely some negatives under Garrett.

Head coaches are truly measured by success. A .596 win percentage is good, but only three playoff appearances and not getting past the divisional round hold him back. A change in head coaches could do the Cowboys well.

Fixing the defense (more so the run defense) needs to be done by reading the offense better. Right now it looks like Dallas’ defense is leaning toward protecting the passing game too much whereas they give too much of an opening against the run.

Adding Bennett should help the run defense, so it’s not as if the Cowboys haven’t addressed this need. More can be done by tackling better and reading the defense. This is up to the coaching to try to fix.

After all this, both the play-calling and defensive flaws fall on the coaching right now. How owner Jerry Jones wants to go about making changes, if any, is unknown. I think an offseason head coaching change would be the best option right now.
