Questions at defense

It’s great to hear that Dak is playing great because the Cowboys defense isn’t. So far this season Dallas put up 30+ points in six games, while they gave up 20+ points in five games.

Their defense has been average, nothing more or worse. The problem with having an average defense is that it puts more pressure on the offense, and it gives a high scoring team the chance to win.

A team with a great defense, but a poor offense can and should be beaten by Dallas simply because of how good the Cowboys offense is. When a team with a great offense lines up against the Cowboys, it becomes a game of who can put up the most points, rather than trying to stop the other team.

There was only one game where it appeared as if Dallas’ offense disappeared, and that was Week 4 against the Saints. Only 10 points were scored, and the Cowboys’ defense didn’t give up a touchdown. Other than that, the offense has been great, and the defense has been average.

Although they don’t tell the entire story, statistics do not lie. Dallas’ defense ranks ninth in points against, seventh in total yards, seventh in passing yards, and 16th in rushing yards. Of course, what stands out is the run defense.

This past Sunday was a great showing of the concerns over the Cowboys run defense. Lions running back Bo Scarbrough averaged 4.9 yards per rushing attempt with one touchdown, and quarterback Jeff Driskel averaged 6.4 yards per rushing attempt with one touchdown as well.

It is important to note that Scarbrough was just called up from the practice squad the day before his NFL debut against Dallas. Also, starting right tackle Rick Wagner was out with a concussion.

Run defense has been a problem all year for Dallas. They did make a trade for defensive lineman Michael Bennett during the bye week, but more change is needed as shown on Sunday.
