Can Colin Kaepernick help the Dallas Cowboys sign Dak Prescott?

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the teams reportedly sending representation to the Colin Kaepernick workout. Could he help to sign Dak Prescott?

The Dallas Cowboys are not only one of the most popular franchises in the NFL and the entire wide world of sports, but they are also somewhat of a pillar in the lives and families of many of their fans.

With such devout dedication and allegiance, there oftentimes are instances where one heaps their own personal beliefs on the team or laundry that they support, just as a natural mechanism.

This is the case with a ton of Cowboy fans. This is especially the case as well when it comes to the divisive topic of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Especially when the owner of your favorite team, in this case Jerry Jones, comes right out and says that he won’t stand for the kneeling that Kaepernick was doing.

No matter your personal feelings, Kaepernick will apparently have a workout for teams on Saturday in Atlanta. Based on many reports, but USA Today specifically here, the Cowboys could be amongst the number of present parties, in some form or fashion.

"Although Cowboys coach Jason Garrett would not confirm it during a briefing with local reporters, a person with knowledge of the team’s plans told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday that the team will have a representative at the workout and interview, which will be conducted at the Falcons’ headquarters."

UPDATE: According to Jon Machota of The Athletic.com, Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan during a radio interview that the Cowboys will not have a representative at Colin Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday, but could still look at his workout on tape.  

While there will be some that disagree with the notion of even entertaining the possibility of signing the exiled signal-caller, let me tell you why you shouldn’t be so quick to write it off.

When thinking about the type of system they run and quarterback that the Cowboys currently call their starter in Dak Prescott, he and Kaepernick have very similar skill sets. They are both mobile, but more power runners than pure speed guys. But they also have a certain elevated sense of awareness about them.

The point is that because they are so similar, it would make sense for them to take a look here for a viable backup. Based on the likenesses, Kaepernick should be able to step right in if need be with minimal to no drop off once he shakes the cobwebs off of his quarterbacking skill set. After all, the former Niners’ passer who took San Francisco to Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, hasn’t played since January 1, 2017.

While this could be the possibility mostly due to a Prescott injury, hopefully not occurring but devastatingly treacherous if so, there is also another elephant in the room to be addressed. Let’s say Dak and the Cowboys can’t come to an agreement on a new deal this offseason, then what happens? If Prescott were to ever pull the hold out card, then Kaepernick would be a great option to have.

The last reason is a bit abstract, but such a Cowboys thing to do. Plain and simply put, they could hoard the talent. In the NFL, where if you don’t have a viable option at quarterback you are done, having multiple capable quarterbacks on the roster isn’t a bad thing. Just ask the Philadelphia Eagles. While the above instances describe Philly’s behavior on the front end, knowing what they had planned for Carson Wentz should have led to the following being their move on the backend.

The Cowboys could sign Kaepernick as an option for injury or if Prescott holds out, but beyond that even, he would be a valuable asset to be able to dangle. When you have the assets that people could or potentially want, you have all the control.

Having the rights to Kaepernick could eventually make a way for the Cowboys to get better in the long run. All it takes is for one play or one cerebral decision (see Andrew Luck) and boom, there’s a taker right there.

At the end of the day, one would like to hope that all is on the up and up with this scenario when it comes to the NFL’s motives. Regardless, the Dallas Cowboys have a lot to consider if they decide to attend Colin Kaepernick’s workout in Atlanta this weekend.
