Jamal Adams, S – New York Jets

Following reports that the Cowboys were interested in acquiring defensive tackle Leonard Williams, you have to hope Dallas asked the New York Jets about the status of safety Jamal Adams too.

The sixth-overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, the price tag for someone like Adams would obviously be extremely high. The 24-year old is a foundational-type player who is coming off his first Pro Bowl season in New York. And the Jets have given up on their high-draft picks before, so asking about Adams would be a prudent thing to do.

Although it’s a pipe dream, having someone like Adams in the Cowboys’ secondary is worth giving up a future first-round selection and more for. That’s in part due to the fact Dallas has been so unwilling to invest high draft selections at the safety position. The last time the Cowboys spent a Day Two pick on a safety was 2013, Georgia Southern’s J.J. Wilcox (third-round). Before that, it was all the way back to 2002 with Oklahoma’s Roy Williams (first-round).

There are no questions about Adam’s talent. The native Texan racked up 115 combined tackles, 12 pass defends, and an interception in 2018. He’s already one of the top players at his position in only his third year. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the Cowboys value the safety position enough to make that kind of investment.
