Dallas Cowboys failed the easiest part of their schedule
By Nick Crain
The Dallas Cowboys had the easiest part of their schedule to start the season. Now they find themselves in a hole with much difficulty ahead.
After six weeks of NFL football, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves sitting at 3-3 with a tough remaining schedule. Have they dug themselves into too much of a hole to get out of based on the schedule they have left?
Among their first six games, the Cowboys played the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and New York Jets.
These six teams have a combined record of 14-20 (41.2 percent), which won’t be the case. The final ten games of the regular season in order include:
- Philadelphia Eagles
- New York Giants
- Minnesota Vikings
- Detroit Lions
- New England Patriots
- Buffalo Bills
- Chicago Bears
- Los Angeles Rams
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Washington Redskins
Among these nine different teams over the next ten games, only two have losing records. This means that at most, there are only two games the Cowboys should feel extremely confident about winning even if they have a bad performance. However, this was also the case against the winless New York Jets who just took down Dallas last week.
When looking at the schedule prior to the start of the season, most people thought that at worst, the Cowboys would head into the Week 7 matchup against the Eagles with a record of 4-2. Instead, they now head into this game at 3-3 with the risk of being 3-4 by the end of the night on Sunday, giving the Eagles sole possession of the NFC East.
Due to the three straight losses heading into this week, Dallas has all must-win games for the remainder of the season. Perhaps the most important two games remaining are against Philadelphia. At this point, it appears that the Cowboys and Eagles will battle for the NFC East playoff spot. Due to this, the Week 7 matchup might be the deciding factor on if Dallas makes the playoffs or not.
The Bears, Rams, Eagles, and Patriots were all playoff teams last season and make up almost half of the Dallas schedule the rest of the way. Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb‘s health going forward are going to be extremely important as well. Without those two receivers, Dak Prescott appears an inferior version of himself. He is a quarterback who needs these types of explosive weapons to have the types of games the Cowboys need him to.
The question at this point is whether this Sundays’ game is the make or break game of the season. If the Dallas Cowboys enter Week 8 with a record of 3-4 including four straight losses, things will not look good. The Eagles will have a huge advantage in winning the division, meaning the Cowboys will be on the outside looking in for an NFL Wildcard spot.
Perhaps it is time for the Cowboys to trade another high draft pick to make a splash in acquiring another playmaker on offense? All we know is that they failed the easiest part of the season. Up next is the hard part of the schedule we all had been waiting for.
