Is the Dallas Cowboys next head coach Urban Meyer? No.
The Dallas Cowboys head coaching gig isn’t available yet, but that didn’t stop former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer from putting his name in the hat.
There’s blood in the water in Dallas. And the coaching sharks are circling one of the most prestigious gigs in all of football. That’s to become the head coach of America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys. And the first one to take a bite is … Urban Meyer?
The position is currently filled in Dallas. Although Jason Garrett entered the 2019 NFL regular season a lame-duck coach. That’s to say Garrett’s current contract expires at the end of the season and there’s been no indication he’ll be receiving an extension. Especially not after the ultra-talented Cowboys lost their past three games.
Still, Dallas remains at the top of the NFC East standings at 3-3. But that could change this weekend depending on the results from the Cowboys’ NFC East matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
If Dallas loses, the team will enter into their bye week on a four-game losing skid. And although the Cowboys could still turn their season around in arguably the weakest division in the NFL, Garrett’s future as head coach is in serious jeopardy.
And there figures to be plenty of candidates to fill Garrett’s role if he and the Cowboys do part ways in the coming months. The most popular seemingly being Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley. And it was a question about Riley’s potential as the next head coach of America’s Team that led to former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer inadvertently throwing his hat in the ring.
During Friday’s episode of FS1’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the show’s host asked Meyer about Riley potentially being interested in the Cowboys’ head coaching job. Here’s how he responded …
"“ … that’s the one. That’s New York Yankees. That’s the Dallas Cowboys. That’s the one. Great city. You’ve got Dak Prescott. You got Zeke Elliott. You got a loaded team. And I can’t speak for him obviously, I hate to even speculate cause I don’t know him, that’s really not fair. But to me, that’s the one job in professional football you kinda say, ‘I gotta go do that.”"
When Meyer was asked if he’d been called by the Cowboys, he said he had not. Then Cowherd posited if he would have been asked, would he have considered taking the job?
"Sure. Absolutely. Yeah. Absolutely. That one? Yes."
Meyer certainly has the résumé to be a potential candidate as the next head coach for the Cowboys. He’s won a total of three National Championship titles. Meyer left Ohio State last year after a seven-year run and an impressive 82-9 record. The 55-year old retired citing health issues following a season where he was forced to serve a three-game suspension after domestic assault allegations were levied against one of his assistant coaches.
Is Urban Meyer the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys? No, I don’t believe he is. First of all, the job is currently filled. Regardless of how you might feel about Jason Garrett, his team is currently still in first place in the NFC East despite their recent losing streak. Secondly, there will be several more attractive candidates to consider rather than someone like Meyer and the potential baggage he brings with him.
