Cowboys vs. Packers: What can we expect from Randall Cobb?

With Randall Cobb playing his first game for the Dallas Cowboys against his former team, the Green Bay Packers, what can we expect to see from him?

The game we assume has been on Randall Cobb’s mind since signing with the Dallas Cowboys is finally upon us. Cobb was drafted by the Green Bay Packers with the 64th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Cobb then went on to spend the next eight seasons in Green Bay, producing 5,524 yards, 470 receptions, and 41 touchdowns over that span. His 147 catches are good for sixth most ever in the Packers’ historic franchise.

In four games so far in Dallas, Cobb has had 14 receptions for 157 yards and one touchdown. In the absence of Michael Gallup, he was truly the number two receiver and asked to do a lot. Whether Gallup will return this Sunday is in the air, but regardless Cobb will look to have a big day against his former team.

When being asked about how he is treating this upcoming game, Cobb played it off, saying it is just another game. Here’s what he told ESPN.com just this past week …

"“It’s football, you know? It’s part of the business. Guys change teams all the time. It’s just how it goes. It’s part of the league, part of the business.”"

After being an offensive juggernaut for many years with Aaron Rodgers at the helm, the team lost both Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb over the past two years leaving the Packers with much fewer passing weapons.

To combat this, Green Bay went out and drafted many defensive players and spent money on defensive playmakers in free agency. Due to this, they are one of the best defenses in the NFL this season.

In the 2019 season, the Packers have had the third best passing defense in the league, allowing only 188.0 yards per contest. The Cowboys, with Cobb as one of their new toys, are fifth in the NFL in passing yards with 279.8 per game. With both of these stats in mind, something has got to give. Will it be Dallas overcoming the Green Bay defense, or vice versa?

Cobb, although off to a slow start, could have a big game against the Packers on Sunday. Even with a few new faces on the Green Bay defense, he went up against this same defense every day in practice last season under Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Although Randall Cobb says this is just another game, you have to assume he will look to make a statement. Playing at home in Dallas, the fans will make even more noise for him when he makes plays due to his circumstance. Especially if Michael Gallup does not make his return from injury, expect Dak Prescott to look for Cobb in the open field to make big plays.
