Dallas Cowboys: Michael Gallup’s surgery opens the door for Devin Smith
The Dallas Cowboys will be without the services of Michael Gallup for 2-4 weeks. And it’s former second-rounder Devin Smith who could benefit the most.
Next man up. That’s been the mantra for Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett when it comes with dealing with injuries throughout his tenure. And rest assured, the Cowboys are dealing with injuries. The latest being to one of their brightest young offensive stars.
Following the Cowboys 31-21 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday, it was revealed that second-year wide receiver Michael Gallup would have an MRI on his knee after he suffered an injury during the Week Two matchup.
On Monday, it was reported that Gallup will have arthroscopic surgery to trim his meniscus, sidelining him for two-to-four weeks. That news according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The fact the Cowboys are set to face the tanking 0-2 Miami Dolphins in Week Three certainly lessens the blow.
But someone will need to step up in Gallup’s place as the 2018 third-rounder currently leads the Cowboys in targets (15), receptions (13), and receiving yardage (226). Although replacing that production will undoubtedly be a group effort, one receiver figures to benefit the most from the extra opportunities. And that’s former 2015 second-rounder, Devin Smith.
Signed to a reserve/futures contract in January by the Cowboys, Smith was a long shot to make the roster after ACL injuries derailed his career. But the former Ohio State star put together some stellar performances in the preseason and during training camp to earn his place on the final-53 last month.
A concussion suffered by wideout Tavon Austin opened the door for Smith to post three catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ win over the Redskins at FedExField. Now, the knee injury suffered by Gallup should give the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Smith even more opportunities to shine.
It’s been a long road to redemption for Devin Smith. And he is making the most of his second chance in Dallas. The 27-year old could prove too valuable for offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterback Dak Prescott to ignore in the coming weeks. If so, Smith could have a prominent role in the offense even after Michael Gallup returns.
