Is this the best Dallas Cowboys team in the Jason Garrett era?
By Nick Crain
In his tenth season as Dallas Cowboys head coach, the 2019 team might be the best he has ever had to work with for a Super Bowl run.
Upon the firing of Wade Phillips in the 2010 NFL season, Jason Garrett took the helm as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Since then, there has been many ups and downs.
With that in mind, the 2019 Dallas Cowboys might be the best team Garrett has had. Ironically enough, it comes in a season in which he is fighting for an extension.
As the head coach, here is how the teams have performed:
- 2010: 6-10
- 2011: 8-8
- 2012: 8-8
- 2013: 8-8
- 2014: 12-4
- 2015: 4-12
- 2016: 13-3
- 2017: 9-7
- 2018: 10-6
Out of all of these years under Garrett, they only made the playoffs in 2014, 2016, and 2018. In all three of these seasons, the Cowboys fell early in the playoffs in the divisional round.
With Ezekiel Elliott, DeMarcus Lawrence, La’el Collins, and Jaylon Smith signing new, large contracts this offseason, it appears owner Jerry Jones is set on winning now. With Travis Frederick back from illness, the Dallas offensive line is back in its best form, among the best in the entire NFL.
Coming into the final year of their respective contracts, Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, Byron Jones, , and Maliek Collins will be playing this season in an effort to get major contracts of their own. This should be motivation enough to play to the best of their abilities.
A linebacker corps of Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch, and Sean Lee is also a top trio in the entire league. As long as they stay healthy, the Dallas Cowboys defense in 2019 will be just as impressive as it was last season, if not better.
Although he is suspended for the first four games of the season, Robert Quinn playing opposite Lawrence will be a quarterback’s nightmare. The signing of Quinn was yet another indicator of Dallas looking to win now.
With all of the quality, young talent on the roster, the locker room should have no issues this season. Veteran tight end Jason Witten is back for one last shot at a Super Bowl and will anchor the team as one of the key leaders and mentors.
Overall, the Dallas Cowboys truly have all of the pieces to be a real Super Bowl contender if they can stay healthy. For Cowboys fans across the world, the expectations are certainly to make it beyond the divisional round, which seems to be the ceiling for past Jason Garrett coached teams. If he wants to be extended as head coach beyond this season, that is exactly what will have to happen.
Beyond Garrett, this the Dallas Cowboys team might be the best since the 1990’s dynasty.
