Stock Falling – Jon’Vea Johnson, WR

Despite getting a team-high eight targets against the Niners, Jon’Vea Johnson was only able to bring in three receptions for 30 yards. We actually earmarked Johnson as a jersey number to watch prior to the game. Although we were right about his usage, we were certainly wrong about his play.

The young trio of Johnson, Reggie Davis, and Jalen Guyton were touted as young players to watch coming out of OTAs and minicamp, specifically as deep threats. And it was Jon’Vea that seemed to emerge through the first two weeks of training camp.

Yet, after two drops during the Blue/White Scrimmage, two more drops against the Niners in the preseason opener, plus a penalty for illegally touching the ball after being forced out of bounds, and bobbling a catch before hitting the out of bounds marker; the undrafted receiver out of Toledo doesn’t seem ready to play under the bright lights of the NFL.

Fortunately for Johnson, both Davis (0 for 2) and Guyton (2 of 4, 14 yards) failed to establish themselves against the 49ers’ reserves as well. Yet, Cowboy receivers Cedrick Wilson and Devin Smith both managed to put up solid performances.

A sixth-round selection in 2018, Wilson would catch all three of his targets for 36 yards. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave the game with a possible concussion. As for Smith, the former second-rounder out of Ohio State ended the game strong bringing in three of his six passes for a team-high 54 receiving yards.

Jon’Vea Johnson had plenty of opportunities to separate himself from the pack on Saturday night. Unfortunately, it appears he’s instead taken a step backward following his preseason debut. Now fading back into a horde of hungry receivers eager to make the Dallas Cowboys final-53 man roster, Johnson is in serious danger of getting lost in the crowd.
