Stock Falling – Mike White, QB

I had a sense of relief when the Dallas Cowboys chose Western Kentucky quarterback Mike White in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite having their future franchise quarterback under center in a young Dak Prescott, it appeared the Cowboys had finally bought into the philosophy of drafting and developing young passers as insurance or possible trade commodities. At the very least, I believed White could challenge undrafted quarterback Cooper Rush for the primary backup role in Dallas.

Unfortunately, the light bulb has yet to turn on for White who is now entering his second season in Dallas. Clearly being outplayed by Rush for the number two role, the former Hilltopper has shown little of the talent that allowed him to throw for over 8,500 yards, 63 touchdowns and only 15 interceptions in two seasons against Conference USA competition.

Last season, White appeared to make the team on potential alone as the Cowboys carried all three quarterbacks on their final-53 man roster. That may not be the case this year as the second-year passer has shown little development.

On Saturday, White completed just nine of his 20 passes (45.0) for 87 yards. Granted he received little support as his patchwork offensive line played poorly and his receivers struggled to get open. But the young quarterback did himself no favors by holding onto the football far too long resulting in three sacks and two fumbles, one of which was lost.

If Mike White continues on this trajectory, it’s hard to envision him being on the active roster come August 31st. Instead, White may have just played himself onto the practice squad as it seems unlikely he is no longer a threat to be claimed by another team. That is, of course, only if another quarterback isn’t also made available during final cuts that the Cowboys like better.
