This one thing could derail the Dallas Cowboys in 2019
By Tyrone Starr
Armed with an extremely potent offense and an up and coming defense, the Dallas Cowboys have Super Bowl potential … and one potential problem.
The 2019 Dallas Cowboys could potentially be the most talented version of this franchise in quite some time. Offensively, there are stars upon stars upon stars (pun well intended).
At quarterback, Dak Prescott is on his way to busting into the upper echelon of the entire league. Prescott should make the Pro Bowl and could contend for All-Pro status with a new quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator behind him.
You already know the league’s most dynamic running back resides in Big D. While some are heavily concerned by Ezekiel Elliott‘s training camp holdout, it does not seem like anyone in the organization shares that feeling. Even in a slightly reduced role, Elliott will contend for his third rushing title in four years.
When it comes to the receiving corps, this group could possibly be the best the Cowboys have had since the hey day of the 90’s. Amari Cooper is a bona fide top ten receiver in the NFL. Gallup is a star on the rise and Cobb could be devastating as the upgrade from former slot receiver Cole Beasley. The group is so good, the Cowboys were able to cut a former 1,000+ yard receiver before training camp even began.
Defensively, the line has star power, skill, youth and most importantly depth. With DeMarcus Lawrence and Robert Quinn on the edges and the waves of quality depth behind them, the 2019 Cowboys could have the most sacks in team history.
Behind them lies, without question, one of two or three best linebacker groups in the entire league. No one has the youth and explosion of Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch. As always, there is the big if of Sean Lee‘s health, but it is no longer the death of the defense if he misses time.
Even the defensive backs have a Pro Bowler in tow with Byron Jones. Along with Jones, youthful talent exists with fellow cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and safety Xavier Woods.
So, what could possibly go wrong? The Dallas Cowboys could be hamstrung by their kicking game.
Last year, the Cowboys surprised everyone by letting long-time incumbent Dan Bailey go as training camp ended. In his stead, Dallas entrusted rookie kicker Brett Maher. As with any rookie, he had his ups and downs, but one thing stood out.
While having a big leg, which ultimately became the biggest reason for the switch, his accuracy from 30-49 yards left something to be desired. Of his six misses, all but one came from this distance which is the most common kick.
Early in the 2019 camp, he has failed to have a perfect day. Each day he’s missed at least one of his six kicks, with a few days of missing two.
At some point, with all the firepower this team possesses, the Cowboys will need their kicker to make a big kick. It will happen early in the season, at least once or twice.
If Brett Maher fails, you can bet the Dallas Cowboys will be making phone calls. If Maher succeeds, he will still be a mystery as the weather gets colder and colder. For a team on the verge of something special, the kicking game will always feel uneasy.
