Jon Kitna compares Dak Prescott’s mindset to Jason Witten
Dallas Cowboys new quarterbacks coach, Jon Kitna, says that Dak Prescott’s mindset is rare. It reminds him of future Hall of Famer Jason Witten.
Jon Kitna spent 17 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL. His last four years as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. His last game was in Week 17 of the 2013 season in Dallas. Kitna came out from retirement for a single game in order to be an emergency backup for Kyle Orton.
Six years later and Kitna has returned to the Cowboys, this time as their new quarterbacks coach, filling the void left by Kellen Moore who was promoted to offensive coordinator in the offseason. And the presence of the 46-year-old veteran gunslinger seems to already be paying dividends.
During the offseason, onlookers noted Cowboys’ starting quarterback Dak Prescott‘s improved accuracy and mechanics. With Prescott entering his fourth season in the NFL, Kitna and his attention to detail approach appear to make him the perfect mentor to take Dak’s game to the next level.
In a recent interview that appeared on the team’s official YouTube page, Kitna explained the rare mindset that both Prescott and Witten seem to share.
"“I think the great thing about [Prescott] is the desire to want to be better everyday … The way he pushes himself. And pushes coaches to make him better. And what that does is elevate everyone else around him. It’s a little bit of the same mindset that Jason Witten has to be honest. And has always had.”"
This is awesome news for Cowboy fans as Witten is a revered figure in Big D. And he’s seen as a future Hall of Famer with a hardhat mentality and unrelenting work ethic. It’s hard to argue the fact the 37-year old has maximized his abilities, securing a whopping 11 Pro Bowl nominations in his illustrious career. Witten’s mentality has also made him an iron man, having only missed one game due to injury in 15 years.
Comparing Dak Prescott’s mentality to that of Jason Witten is likely the highest compliment Jon Kitna can give. Witten is already one of the most beloved players in Dallas Cowboys’ history. And his mentality is the stuff of legend. If Prescott possesses that same mentality, the Dallas’ brass should grant him a healthy, long-term contract extension as soon as possible and make him a Cowboy for life.
