When the Dallas Cowboys take the field for the first time in 2019, the offense will be influenced by Jason Garrett more than it has been in years.

Longtime fans of the Dallas Cowboys have a full scope of the career of head coach Jason Garrett. The now 53-year-old Garrett was once the backup quarterback to Cowboys’ Hall of Famer Troy Aikman in Dallas.

Garrett spent seven seasons in Dallas. And after a spending three years with the New York Giants, along with short stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins, Garrett decided to hang up his cleats for good in 2004. He would then use his football knowledge as a professional backup quarterback to land himself a coaching gig.

Hired by then-Dolphins head coach Nick Saban, Garrett spent two seasons as the quarterbacks coach in Miami. He would make the transition to offensive coordinator (OC) with his old team, the Cowboys, in 2007.

During Garrett’s first season as the OC in Dallas, the Cowboys ranked second in scoring offense averaging of 28.4 points per game. The offense would rank second in total net yards (6,390) just two years later.

Garrett would eventually replace Wade Phillips as interim head coach of America’s Team midway through the 2010 season. And the rest, as they say, is history.

But as the Cowboys have struggled under Garrett’s tenure, the former offensive coordinator has delegated more and more of the offense responsibilities to others like Bill Callahan, Scott Linehan, and now Kellen Moore.

Much like Garrett before him, Moore was a backup quarterback in the NFL for six seasons. Last year, he transitioned from player to coach, becoming the Cowboys’ quarterback coach in 2018. This offseason, Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator after the departure of Linehan.

In order to help the transition, Garrett told ESPN’s Todd Archer that he has his increased involvement with the offense this year.

"“I’m more connected with the offense right now than I’ve been in recent years … We have some young coaches on the offensive side of the ball, so I’ve been a little bit more engaged in that all throughout the offseason. But hopefully we’ll get to the point where we can get it balanced back out again.”"

Along with Kellen Moore as the Cowboys’ new offensive coordinator, this will be Jon Kitna‘s first season as the team’s quarterbacks coach. He’s also a former NFL passer. Offensive line coach Marc Colombo was promoted to his position last season during the team’s bye week. Both wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal and tight ends coach Doug Nussmeier are entering their second season on the Cowboys’ coaching staff.

Jason Garrett is entering the 2019 season in the final year of his current contract with the Dallas Cowboys. In what appears to be a prove-it year for the tenured coach, it’s understandable why Garrett may want more control of the offense seeing that his job could very well be on the line.
