Dallas Cowboys: As Ezekiel Elliott holds out could Jay Ajayi be an option?
Rumors are swirling around the Dallas Cowboys and star running back Ezekiel Elliott. With all of the rumors do the Cowboys have a back up plan in place?
The Dallas Cowboys have landed in Oxnard, California to begin training camp this weekend. Unfortunately, a major cog in their future plans and aspirations for another NFL championship wasn’t with them. With fourth-year running back Ezekiel Elliott holding out for a new deal, the Cowboys are in a sticky situation.
You don’t want to alienate Elliott by bringing in another running back. But the Cowboys need to cover themselves. And they must make sure that they don’t overwork the running backs that have who actually did show up to training camp.
Dallas needs a back up plan and quick. And a veteran runner my have just fallen into their lap. Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Jay Ajayi has been cleared to play after tearing his ACL last season, that according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Ajayi is a experienced running back that has shown he can make plays in this league. Now he does come with some risk, as signing a player coming off of a major knee injury always will.
Ajayi could always injure that knee again but, there are a few positives to signing him as well. He is still young in running back years having played just four seasons. And before his injury Ajayi was putting up impressive numbers for the Eagles. He posted 184 rushing yards and three touchdowns in four games in 2018.
The Cowboys could likely sign Ajayi to a one-year, prove-it deal, much like other Cowboy free agent signings from this offseason in defensive end Robert Quinn and wide receiver Randall Cobb.
There are a few teams that are already actively trying to sign Ajayi right now, so the Cowboys must act quickly if this is going to happen. They should not go into training camp with just Tony Pollard, Mike Weber, and Darius Jackson at running back. Two of them are rookies and the lone veteran, Jackson, has garnered a total of six carries for 16 rushing yards in three years.
This Dallas Cowboys team is built to win now and they can’t let one player derail that. Even if it is an All-Pro running back.
