Will the Cowboys play earn coach Jason Garrett an extension?

For Cowboys fans, the season is full of hope. The roster is full of talented players who are capable of winning playoff games. The coaching staff remains a question mark despite head coach Jason Garrett coaching in his ninth season with the team – the fifth longest tenure of any NFL coach.

While he may be the second longest tenured Cowboys coach but Jason Garrett is coaching for his next contract. The Cowboys elected not to renegotiate his contract this off-season and instead let him coach the last year of his 2015 deal.

We will know if owner Jerry Jones feels the 2019 season was successful should Garrett get another contract from the club. The debate for defining success has many outcomes.

Some fans would say that a Super Bowl appearance is a must with the roster that has been assembled. Others would be happy with an NFC Championship game appearance.

There are some who would consider it a successful season if Jason Garrett is not the coach in 2020. No matter the outcome, the journey to determine if the coach returns or not will be a story all season for the Cowboys.

Before Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys, the team had only ever had one coach from 1960 to 1988 – Hall of Famer Tom Landry. From 1989 to this season, Jones has cycled through Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Bill Parcells, Wade Phillips and now Jason Garrett.

Of late, Jones has shown a lot more patience with his coach – maybe trying to emulate the success the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots, the two franchises with six Super Bowl wins, have had with their coaching models. The 2019 season will be a make or break season for Jason Garrett.

Since Jerry Jones has been the owner of America’s Team, the storylines seem to follow his team. I don’t think he would want it any other way.
