With only 44 more days until the Dallas Cowboys host the New York Giants, here are three critical storylines I’ll be watching closely this season.

It’s been 195 days since the Dallas Cowboys played a meaningful football game. Training camp starts today – it is finally here. The NFL has done a good job to keep football in our thoughts during the offseason but there is nothing than can replace actually playing the game.

We can stop talking about the draft, OTAs, contracts (temporarily – still a few unfinished things to do) and all the other offseason stuff that doesn’t matter because pads and full contact practices are back. We can now focus on what happens between the white lines.

There are several story lines to follow in training camp. Who will be the backup quarterback seems to be a popular topic for discussion.

Will defensive end Randy Gregory be a contributor this year? Will we finally see former first round draft pick Taco Charlton show up at defensive end this year?

Will the team make it out of training camp healthy without any significant injuries? Will the coaching staff manage the starters snaps even in the dress rehearsal?

How many rookies will make this talent stocked team? Will the Cowboys lose anyone they cut and were hoping to sneak onto the practice squad?

Will the Cowboys sign any new contracts before the season begins? Or will they let quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver Amari Cooper, offensive tackle La’el Collins, defensive tackle Maliek Collins, cornerback Byron Jones and many others play out their contracts?

While those stories will be told, here are three storylines I will be watching closely this year …

  • Who will earn plays at safety?
  • Can Dak Prescott be the straw that stirs the drink?
  • Will the Cowboys play earn coach Jason Garrett an extension?
