Plenty of battles will take place during Dallas Cowboys training camp, but heated warfare in the trenches will add unlimited excitement.

Last August the Dallas Cowboys absorbed interior line setbacks that dampened some of the fire in the middle of the line camp confrontations.

Starting defensive tackle Maliek Collins was recovering from injury. All-Pro center Travis Frederick withdrew to address an unforeseen illness. Rookie guard Connor Williams predictably arrived at a disadvantaged weight. The concerns were plenty.

There’s just something uniquely exciting about seeing the big uglies inside go toe to toe when the pads finally come on. While last camp wasn’t ideal for these heavyweight fights, this one will be exponentially more exciting.

FLAMETHROWERS IN TOW

On the interior defense, Collins is in a contract year and the healthiest he’s been in a long while. His starting tackle partner Antwaun Woods will be recovered from surgery and ready to wreak havoc again like last camp.

There will also be ample reinforcements on hand. Personally, I’m more than ready to witness the awaited debut of veteran, free agent signing Christian Covington. His transition to the 4-3 defense could provide a needed force inside.

Two rookies join the fray in top 2019 draft pick Trysten Hill and undrafted, two-time All-Big 12 selection Daniel Wise. All this beef will be locked and loaded for Oxnard.

FIREFIGHTERS ON SCENE

Across from the defensive infernos will be a wall of offensive brutes ready to douse the flames. Frederick is set to make his long-awaited return to full contact, though he will understandably be eased into it.

Second-year guard Williams has added 15 pounds of muscle and is ready to flex the new strength in his second act. Multiple All-Pro Zack Martin will look to smash all comers as usual at right guard.

Backing up the starting three will be 2018’s starting center, Joe Looney. Making his rookie debut will be highly touted 2019 draft pick, Connor McGovern.

The main five defenders each have the potential to cause physical destruction. While the top five interior protectors all have the talent to make them pay for it.
