The NFL will hold their NFL supplemental draft on Wednesday afternoon. Will the Dallas Cowboys take a late-round flier on any of the five candidates?

Since the start of the NFL supplemental draft back in 1977, the Dallas Cowboys have selected five players during this post-draft after-thought. The last player the Cowboys drafted during this unusual event was Illinois nose tackle Josh Brent back in 2010.

The NFL supplemental draft is made up of college prospects that, for one reason or another, could not be selected in the standard NFL draft that took place in April. In order to draft a player in this seven-round event, a team forfeits their corresponding selection in next’s year regular draft.

The most famous player the Cowboys ever drafted in the supplemental draft was Miami quarterback Steve Walsh in 1989, which cost the team what would have been the number one overall pick in the 1990 draft.

Some superstar players have been found through the supplemental draft. Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter was a fourth-round selection out of Ohio State by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1987. Other notable names include quarterbacks Bernie Kosar and Ahmad Brooks, wide receivers Rob Moore and Josh Gordon, nose tackle Jamal Williams and linebacker Brian Bosworth.

Last year, two cornerbacks were taken in the supplemental draft by NFC East teams, Western Michigan’s Sam Beal (New York Giants) and West Virginia’s Adonis Alexander (Washington Redskins).

The five former college players eligible to be selected in the 2019 NFL supplemental draft are …

Jalen Thompson, S – Washington State,
Marcus Simms, WR – West Virginia Syracuse linebacker
Shyheim Cullen, LB – Syracuse
Devonaire Clarington, TE – Northland Community College
Bryant Perry, DB – Saint Francis

The Cowboys could potentially use depth at all of the above positions. But the one player Dallas would possibly take the risk on would be Jalen Thompson, whom many believe will get drafted by someone. The safety position is an area of need for the Cowboys.

Thompson was an All-Pac-12 selection last season who posted a combined 139 tackles, 10 pass defends and six interceptions over his last two years at Washington State. He is projected to go as high as the second round.

Update: Jalen Thompson was the only player selected in the 2019 NFL supplemental draft. Thompson was taken in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals.

According to DallasCowboys.com’s football analyst Bryan Broaddus, the Dallas Cowboys are electing not to participate in this afternoon’s supplemental draft. They likely do not believe any of the candidates are worth dipping into next year’s draft picks for. But if a talent like Jalen Thompson starts to fall, he might be worth a late-round flier.
