Dallas Cowboys: Where is the love for Byron Jones?
The Dallas Cowboys secondary saw a boost in 2018. Led by Byron Jones at cornerback, the defense was transformed. Are the ‘Boys underestimating his talents?
Whatever you do, don’t forget about Byron Jones. At the moment, the Dallas Cowboys are caught in a supernova of contracts with their offensive stars looking for a new coin.
Yes, the ‘Boys are busy locking up quarterback Dak Prescott. Eventually, his big target of a wide receiver, Amari Cooper, will get a new contract to sign as well. Of course, number 4 has a partner in crime in Ezekiel Elliott, who is also looking to get off his rookie deal eventually.
So yeah, the Dallas Cowboys are busy locking in on their key players. Jones, who made a remarkable transition from safety to corner in 2018, is heading into a contract year as well. The Cowboys have his services until 2020, so what’s the big deal, right?
Well, remember the recent days of cornerback carousel? Basically, the equivalent of pre-Tony Romo years where the organization was lost in purgatory without a star quarterback. Finally, in 2018, the Dallas Cowboys assembled a formidable cornerback room.
Simply put, Jones showed the world (and the Dallas Cowboys) why he is first round talent. Forgive me if I’m being dramatic here, but I do recall the days of super hype when the organization took Morris Claiborne sixth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. With Claiborne, the future was supposed to happen there and then but as well know, none of that came into fruition.
Of course, there was the famous crash and landing of Brandon Carr, the expensive experiment that finally saw the Cowboys stretch the dollar in free agency. The pair never lived up to the hype. It wasn’t even close. And round and round the cornerback carousel went.
That is until the Cowboys drafted a very talented guy out of the University of Connecticut. Still only 26 years old, number 31 is entering the prime of his years. Having invested in one position, and only one position, Jones has demonstrated his ability to play at the elite level.
Paired with Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis, the Dallas Cowboys have a bright future in the cornerback room, which of course is a cog in an already brilliant defensive unit.
The Cowboys will have to play wait and see due to Jones recent hip surgery episode. But with the cornerback expected to play the first game, Dallas can begin their evaluations sooner than later. Should Jones miss significant time, the Cowboys will have a hard time filling his spot with another shutdown corner.
But by then, the Dallas Cowboys would at least know what they would have to do to kill the cornerback carousel for good. Simple. Show No. 31 some love. Pay Byron Jones.
