Jason Garrett is entering his 10th year as the head coach for the Dallas Cowboys. The best case scenario for Dallas fans is that he coaches for a long time.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is on the last season of his current contract. The front office decided to not extend him and to let him prove to the organization that he is the best option moving forward. If he wins a championship, he will coach for the foreseeable future– so Cowboys fans should hope he is the coach going into next year.

The Cowboys have yet to make it to the NFC Conference Championship since their last Super Bowl run in 1995. Out of all current coaches with at least 100 games under their belt, Garrett has the 7th best win percentage (56.0 percent). In the last three seasons, the Cowboys have won the second most games– just behind the New England Patriots.

Despite this, Garrett has only won two playoff games in his coaching career. Several key injuries have made it very hard for Garrett to have postseason success, most notable injuries to former quarterback Tony Romo.

But ultimately a coach is respected on how he makes adjustments. Dallas has had several seasons with very good rosters that should have competed for a Super Bowl.

In 2017, the Cowboys lost left tackle Tyron Smith, linebacker Sean Lee to injuries. Ezekiel Elliott missed several games due to a suspension. All of these events happened simultaneously, and it would have made sense if the team’s play dropped off a significant amount.

However, the team fell apart. In one game against the Atlanta Falcons, defensive end Adrian Clayborn recorded six sacks and one forced fumble against Dallas. Garrett didn’t help out the left tackle with a tight end, a running back, or any scheme change in the blocking.

Garrett has the mindset of: we do what we do. This is stubborn coaching. Garrett has not shown the ability to adapt to opposing teams strengths and weaknesses on a week to week basis.

With all this being said, Garrett has several very good qualities. The players love Garrett and that is very important. There is never a doubt that the Cowboys will play hard to the very end. Not all coaches have the tools to motivate grown men, but Garrett does.

Garrett also has worked very hard in developing the chemistry of the team. The Cowboys are very unique in how the defense and the offense gel together. Usually, offensive players stick to players on the offense and the same with the defense. In Dallas’ locker room, players from both sides of the ball can be seen hanging out with each other.

Jerry Jones won’t extend Garrett unless the Cowboys get past the divisional round. If the Cowboys win, Garrett will be signed to another contract. So for Cowboys fan, everyone should hope Garrett is still wearing a headset for Dallas in 2020.
