Dallas Cowboys: Who will win the race at wide receiver?
The Dallas Cowboys seem plenty of wide receivers on the roster heading into training camp. Yet not enough spots on the team, so who will make the cut?
This time last season the Dallas Cowboys talked themselves into thinking that the receiving core of Cole Beasley, Michael Gallup, Deonte Thompson, Allen Hurns and Tavon Austin would be enough to help them win. Oh how wrong they were, this season they have a lot of new faces at the position but not all can make the team.
The addition on Amari Cooper last year proved to the Cowboys management team that you can’t win without star power at the position. After him the newly acquired Randall Cobb, Michael Gallup and Allen Hurns are the only true locks to make this team. After that is anyone’s guess.
So lets take a look at the contenders see who I think can make the team, practice squad, or get cut.
Tavon Austin – makes the roster
Austin is the only big name on this list and he is going to be battling a lot of younger receivers who have speed and the one think he lacks, size. His ability to stand out on special teams though will help him make this roster.
Devin Smith – roster cut
Smith was brought in early in the offseason as a speed guy for the Cowboys. Now that they have upgraded the position with speed he looks like more of a camp body at this point. Odds are he is cut early in the roster cut down.
Cedrick Wilson – makes the roster
Wilson was a very productive player in college and before his injury last off-season he was showing promise as a late round pick for the Dallas Cowboys. His ability to play every position at receiver will help him make the roster.
Lance Lenoir – roster cut
With his speed not being an advantage anymore Lenoir is on the outside looking in. And with Austin making the team for his special team abilities there is no reason to keep Lenoir around. His time with the Cowboys will come to an end this year.
Reggie Davis – practice squad
Davis has been turning heads early in OTA’s and minicamp practices. The problem for Davis is he lacks the size that a lot of the other receivers bring to the table. I just don’t think he will be able to hold up and needs more time to bulk up.
Noah Brown – roster cut
Brown was primarily used as a blocking receiver because of his size in the Cowboys offense this season. The Cowboys this season look like they are going to use their receivers speed down the field to clear space for Ezekiel Elliott in the running game. Looks like Brown is gone this year.
Jon’Vea Johnson – makes the roster
The Dallas Cowboys came into the draft looking speed at receiver and they found it in Johnson. Majority of the talk around OTA’s and minicamp were about how fast Johnson is and his ability to make plays. He should be able to keep this going in the preseason and make the team.
Jalen Guyton – practice squad
Guyton was brought in as a priority free agent after the draft and has flashed at times in OTA’s and minicamp. He just hasn’t shown enough to beat out Wilson, Johnson or Austin. Look for the Cowboys to try and stash him on the practice squad.
