One of quarterback Dak Prescott’s best attributes is his durability. But if he were to goes down, which backup would then step up for the Dallas Cowboys?

As of now, the Dallas Cowboys have three quarterbacks on the roster: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, and Mike White. Prescott has not missed a game his entire NFL career, but at any point, he could be injured and miss time.

White was drafted last year in the fifth round of the NFL draft. The only NFL experience for White came in last year’s preseason. In those four games, White completed 44 of 70 passes (62.8 completion percentage) for a combined 414 yards (5.9 yards per attempt), zero touchdowns, and one interception.

Though he did not have a great showing in the preseason, the Cowboys’ front office and coaching staff will give him some more chances to prove himself. A fifth-round draft pick, though not a premium asset, is still a valuable asset. Teams usually hold on to these players for as long as possible.

Ahead of training camp, the backup quarterback battle will be competition to watch for, even though it might not be the most glamours camp battle. Though White will most likely become a franchise quarterback, he could become a reliable backup for years– much like quarterback Jon Kitna.

Rush, on the other hand, has had some success against NFL competition. In 2017, Cooper might have been the best quarterback in the preseason. Cooper, an undrafted quarterback, showed signs of potentially becoming the next Tony Romo.

However, last year Cooper did not do as well. Cooper threw for 407 yards (5.5 yards per attempt) on 46 of 74 attempts (62.2 completion percentage). Cooper has the edge over White considering he has shown at least the ability to play at a decent level, but because of his inconsistency, they are practically neck and neck.

If neither White nor Cooper takes a step up in training camp/preseason, the Dallas Cowboys should consider adding a veteran to backup Prescott. This may not be the glamorous topic considering America’s Team, but it could be the difference between making the playoffs and watching them from the couch.
