The Dallas Cowboys roster looks locked and loaded headed into 2019 with talent all over the field. With that said, some players could miss a step in 2019.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most talented teams on paper headed into training camp. With almost every position with a solid player or players, the Cowboys are bound for success.

Every year each NFL team has players that do not take the next step or build on the success they had in the past. Let us look at the players who could struggle in 2019.

Byron Jones, CB

Cornerback Byron Jones has excelled since being switched from the safety position to cornerback a few years back. Jones was named to the Pro Bowl last year as well as being named to second-team All-Pro.

Byron Jones is known for being one of the most lockdown corners in the NFL and the quarterbacks have taken notice as they tend to shy away to Jones’ side of the field.

Towards the end of the 2018 season, we saw Byron starting to get beat by wide receivers on a somewhat consistent basis. Though it was not often, opposing quarterbacks could start taking notice and know that going to No. 31’s side of the field is not that bad.

Hopefully, Byron Jones can learn from his mistakes and continue playing as he did for most of 2018.

Jason Witten, TE

Jason Witten put the excitement back into Cowboys fans when he decided to return to the field after one year away from the game. Witten has had a Hall of Fame career so some might ask: How could he possibly disappoint?

Us as Cowboys fans have received nothing but brilliance from No. 82 for his entire career when he is out on the field. The reason he might disappoint is that I firmly believe that he will not be out on the field as much as we are expecting.

Look, Jason Witten is old. I hope I am wrong, but I’m sure he has lost a step since he last played. When he is out there, he will most definitely find the open spaces in the defense, but the Cowboys are not just going to keep tight end Blake Jarwin on the bench the entire season.

Witten’s return will only help the Cowboys, but do not expect the same player we saw in 2017.

DeMarcus Lawrence, DE

The staple of the Cowboys defense the past few seasons has been defensive end, DeMarcus Lawrence. Tank is unquestionably one of the top pass rushers in the NFL.

One thing that could lead to Lawrence drop off is that he has finally received the contract he has been working to get for years now. Around the NFL, we see many times players production drop off once they receive a contract. Whether that is due to lack of motivation or whatever the case may be, we see it way too often.

I believe Tank will still record a solid number of sacks in 2019, but it would not shock me if the number of sacks dipped a tad from what they were the past two seasons.

I pray that I am totally wrong about all of this. Go, Cowboys!
