Dallas Cowboys: Interesting training camp battles on the horizon
The Dallas Cowboys OTA practices have created buzz around certain players after two weeks. Setting up some interesting training camp battles in the future.
Over the past two weeks, we’ve heard from Dallas Cowboys coaching staff and reporters praising players able to pick up the schemes thrown at them and their physical abilities in practice. All of this praise is starting to set up some interesting camp battles going into training camp.
While some dealing with big names while others, while they may be small, will have a big impact on this team.
Kavon Fraizer vs. Donovan Wilson
Fraizer missing time due to a knee scope has allowed Wilson to take additional reps at the safety position. During that time Wilson has shown that he is able to pick up the defense and shift into different looks depending on his assignments. Fraizer may need to have a strong training camp to hold off Wilson, just being a special teams ace isn’t going to help him make the team this season.
Tyrone Crawford vs. Kerry Hyder vs. Jalen Jelks
All three of these players have the ability to play defensive end as well as under tackle in pass rushing situations. The Cowboys know what they are getting from Crawford but, after having charges filed against him last month he could be on thin ice with the team.
Jelks while taken with the Dallas Cowboys last pick in the draft, has shown that he is able to make plays in the running back with his quick first step. Hyder is the wildcard, he has shown that he can play both positions in the NFL but do the Cowboys see him more as a defensive end overall?
Tavon Austin vs. Lance Lenoir vs. Jon’Vea Johnson
This Cowboys team has been looking for speed at the receiver position for years without any luck. Now with these three on the roster, they have to make the hard decision on who must go. Austin brings you the explosiveness on offense and special teams return ability. Lenoir brings quickness in route running but wasn’t good enough on special teams. Johnson has shown the coaches he has the speed but can he help them on special teams?
Daniel Ross vs. Daniel Wise
Ross isn’t a big name but the Cowboys brought him back for depth along the defensive line. During his time in Dallas, Ross has played well but he is still in danger of not making this team. Daniel Wise has started to show up for the coaches at practice with his quickness and violent hands attacking offensive lineman. If Wise can keep this up at training camp he could be another successful undrafted rookie to make this roster.
