Dallas Cowboys: Tony Pollard is already shining in OTA’s
By Nick Crain
Dallas Cowboys rookie Tony Pollard is already impressing coaches and teammates. How does he fit on the 2019 Cowboys roster?
Dallas Cowboys rookie Tony Pollard is an extremely interesting player. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and played both wide receiver and corner back in high school. His senior year, Pollard lead his team to the playoffs with over 1,200 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns.
After high school, Pollard attended college at the University of Memphis, specializing as a pass-catching running back as well as a return man.
In his three years of college, he caught 104 passes for 1,292 yards. He also ran the ball quite a bit, racking up 139 career rush attempts for 941 yards. Overall, he accounted for 18 total offensive touchdowns in his three years.
As a return man, Pollard was extremely special in college. As a redshirt freshman he had two kickoff returns for touchdowns and was named the Special Teams Player of the Year for the American Athletic Conference.
The very next year, he would double that and have four kickoff returns for touchdowns, once again earning Special Teams Player of the Year for the American Athletic Conference. He also led the entire NCAA in average yards per kickoff return that season.
In his final season at Memphis, Pollard only returned one kickoff for a touchdown, but ended his career with a bang. In his final college game, in the 2018 Birmingham Bowl, Pollard produced 209 kickoff return yards in that game alone.
Tony Pollard entered the 2019 NFL Draft and was selected 128th overall in the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys, who desperately needed a backup running back.
Although he may seem like a smaller gadget-type running back, at 6’0 and 208 pounds, Pollard is not a small by any means. He can do more than just catch the ball and be used as a return man. He has the size to run between the tackles and be more than just a situational back.
Playing wide receiver in high school and being a pass catching running back in college fits exactly what Dallas needs at backup RB. Tony Pollard could be extremely dangerous next to Tavon Austin in the return game as well. Austin has already proven he can make an impact on special teams, and Pollard can only help.
From what we’ve heard about Pollard in Organized Team Activities (OTA’s), he is already impressing both the coaching staff and his teammates
Tony Pollard should be a very intriguing piece in the Dallas Cowboys offense in the 2019 season.
