Jon Kitna: Dak Prescott throws similar to Warren Moon
The Dallas Cowboys new quarterback coach, Jon Kitna, compared Dak Prescott to Hall of Fame passer Warren Moon. Do you agree?
It’s difficult to find a comparison to Dallas Cowboys‘ quarterback Dak Prescott. At 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, Prescott is a superb athlete whose pure mass makes it difficult for defenders to bring him down. But Dak also possesses the playmaking ability and sneaky speed that makes him one of the league’s best running threats out of the pocket.
Prescott has also been a winner in Dallas, taking the Cowboys to the postseason twice in his first three seasons. He’s also been nominated to the Pro Bowl the same amount of times and was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016.
The one major criticism that continues to plague the young passer is his bouts of inaccuracy. It’s an issue fans hope new quarterbacks coach Jon Kitna will be able to help with. Kitna played a whopping 17 years in the NFL for teams like the Cowboys, the Seattle Seahawks, the Detroit Lions, and the Cincinnati Bengals.
After spending the past few years coaching high school football, Kitna joined the Cowboys this offseason once Kellen Moore, last year’s quarterback coach, was promoted to offensive coordinator.
In a recent interview, Kitna told the team’s official website that Prescott reminds him of a certain Hall of Fame quarterback he used to play with.
"“We’re not going to come in here and try to revamp people … you don’t need to with [Prescott]. I had a chance to play with Warren Moon my second and third years. And I feel like he throws the ball very similar to Warren. It’s one of the tightest spirals you’ll ever see.”"
Cowboys’ fans should like Kitna’s comparison of Prescott to Moon. The Hall of Fame passer is considered one of best quarterbacks in league history when it came to spinning a football. During his epic 17-year career in the NFL, Moon racked up near 5,000 passing yards and posted 291 touchdowns.
Prior to his NFL career, Moon dominated the Canadian Football League (CFL) winning five-straight Grey Cups. Check out a segment of his A Football Life documentary by NFL Network here. Does Warren remind you of Dak?
One surprising area when Prescott actually tops Moon statically is in completion percentage. Through three seasons, Dak has posted an average completion percentage of 66.1. His 67.8 percentage from last season was the 10th best in the NFL. Moon’s career average is a lowly 58.4 and he never recorded a completion percentage higher than 64.7.
Regardless, anytime you get compared to a Hall of Famer it’s an honor. As for Jon Kitna, he’d know better than most having played with Warren Moon during their two-year stint together in Seattle back in the late 1990s. As for Dak Prescott, fans have to hope Kitna’s experience can help set the fourth-year passer on a Hall of Fame path of his own.
