Dallas Cowboys offense has a chance to be elite in 2019
The Dallas Cowboys have added quite a few pieces to their offensive arsenal. They have the chance to be really special this season on that side of the ball.
The Dallas Cowboys have managed to assemble decent offenses throughout Dak Prescott‘s three years in the league. Although decent is enough to make it into the playoffs, as Prescott and the Cowboys have shown across two of his three seasons, it might not be enough to accomplish the ultimate goal which is a Super Bowl victory.
While the mid-season addition of Amari Cooper did help last season, the Dallas Cowboys still wound up ranking in the bottom third when it came to total offensive production. The Cowboys brass must have been very aware of this issue, as they made quite a few acquisitions this past offseason, via free agency and the draft. If these transactions work out the way they hope, not only will they be a lot better than last season on this side of the ball, but they could be elite.
One of the first things to really like about the changes made to the roster is the current overall depth at the tailback position. Although all-world workhorse Ezekiel Elliott is still the unquestioned leader of the backfield, what they brought in to supplement Zeke should make Cowboys fans excited.
Mike Weber, the former Ohio State back selected in the seventh round, could end up being one of the steals of the draft. Although he won’t get the chance to show a ton, if he can stay healthy, he should be able to provide more than quality backup snaps behind Zeke. He is a down-hill type guy who should not only be able to successfully give Zeke a break, but he could also be a game breaker himself in goal-line and short yardage situations.
Tony Pollard, a multi-dimensional dual athlete, will also be something to behold once he gets going in this offense. A return man, a wide receiver, and a running back during his time at Memphis, he is that wild card player who could run a fly route for touchdowns, take reverses or sweeps the distance, and make big plays in whatever manner the Cowboys devise to get the ball in his hands. He has obviously impressed, so much so, that it has some wondering whether gadget guy Tavon Austin will even make the final roster.
When you look at the wide receiver group, the possibilities seem endless. Of course you have Amari Cooper, who is going to do what he does and can almost be counted on to approach 200 yards in at least two games per season as he has for the most of his career. Michael Gallup should come back much improved after having a full season under his belt and a full offseason of NFL training.
If you look at the veteran in Randall Cobb, you already should know what he brings to the table. Not only will he be another security blanket for Dak, as he was for Aaron Rodgers all those years in Green Bay, but he is also a guy that knows how to find the sticks on first downs and the goal line in scoring situations.
Throw in Cedrick Wilson Jr., who was injured last season, along with a few more familiar names like Noah Brown and Lance Lenoir, and the Cowboys seem to have a wide receiver room full of potential. You can’t forget about Tavon Austin here, who as mentioned, might not even make the team because of the glut of talent at the position.
When you look at the tight end group and the ultimate return of all-time Cowboy Jason Witten, that immediately lets you know that there will be consistent production from that position this season.
Also, consider the fact that Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin took turns showing out for the team last season, and that position has about as much talent to offer as it has since Tony Romo retired. If you dive even deeper than that, Rico Gathers showed a bit of the athleticism last season that’s helping him remain on the roster at this point, and he could be another guy who finally takes the next step.
With Travis Frederick set to return, although still battling through recovery from shoulder surgery on top of managing his disorder, the offensive line has a great chance to regain their form as well. You have to also consider that arguably one of the best offensive tackles in the league when healthy is coming back “faster and stronger” by his own account, and that unit should be as strong as they have been in a season or so.
When you think about what it takes to have a good offense, the Dallas Cowboys seem to have it all. If they can put it all together, and maximize the offerings that each position can bring to the offense, they have a better than good shot to be among the elite offenses in the league. The talent would say that they even have a shot at competing to be the best.
