The greatest tight end in Dallas Cowboys history returns to the team in hopes to lead this young core on a Super Bowl run.

Last season, Dallas Cowboys‘ tight end Jason Witten decided it was time to hang up the cleats and join the ESPN Monday Night Football broadcast.

It was a rough year for Witten who didn’t necessarily excel in the booth like former Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo did. Witten knew it was time for a change and decided to return to the field on a one-year deal worth $5 million.

According to NFL.com’s Herbie Teope, Witten is excited about his return to the field and looks to be a leader next season. Here’s what the veteran tight end said in a statement back in February according to the league’s official website.

"“The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong. This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship.”"

Tight end production was almost non-existent last season for quarterback Dak Prescott and the offense. While Witten isn’t expected to have a 800-1,000 yard season next year he provides a security blanket for Prescott.

Witten, who turned 37-years old last week, finished the 2017 season with 63 catches for 560 yards and five touchdowns. Even in the later years of his career, he always seemed to have a knack for getting open on third downs. While Dallas’ production on third down increased with the arrival of wide receiver Amari Cooper, it will only give the Cowboys another reliable option in the middle of the field.

Witten’s leadership is the key factor that he brings to the table. He’s an 11-time Pro Bowler who knows a thing or two about succeeding in the NFL. And Witten clearly understands the potential this Cowboys’ team presents.

This may be the year for the Dallas Cowboys to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995. Jason Witten’s presence on-and-off the field will help fuel the team throughout the season and if he can rally them together, we might finally see him raise the Lombardi Trophy.
