Despite the fact the Dallas Cowboys elected not to draft him, the team is reportedly signing defensive tackle Daniel Wise as an undrafted free agent.

When the 2019 NFL Draft ended on Saturday afternoon, there were many talented prospects who did not hear their name get called. Those players instantly became undrafted free agents and teams around the league, including the Dallas Cowboys, were in a mad scramble to sign them.

One such player was defensive tackle Daniel Wise. The Kansas defender was speculated to be a possible draft selection by the Cowboys in the 2019 NFL Draft. Instead, Wise went undrafted. But according to The Athletic’s Calvin Watkins, Wise is coming to Dallas anyway. Watkins is reporting that the Cowboys have signed him as an undrafted free agent.

Wise allegedly had a private visit with the Cowboys earlier this offseason. Dallas drafted his Kansas teammate defensive end Dorance Armstrong in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and undoubtedly noticed 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle as well.

Alongside Armstrong, Wise posted his best season for the Jayhawks, recording 53 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and causing two fumbles in 2017. He was also named First Team All-Big 12. Although his production waned without Armstrong beside him last season, Wise was still able to post 34 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

In Dallas, Wise and the Cowboys’ recent second-round selection, Trysten Hill, should provide the Cowboys with improved interior line play. But the undrafted rookie will still have to fight hard for his opportunities as the depth chart at defensive tackle is currently stacked.

But the Texas native certainly has the genes to be a quality NFL defender. Daniel Wise’s father, Deatrich Wise Sr., was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks back in 1988. And his brother, Deatrich Wise Jr., is currently a defensive end for the New England Patriots.
